The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking anAccessioning and Processing Archivist whose primary responsibility will be toaccession and appraise manuscripts collections. This is a part-time (.5 FTE),career-track appointment. The successful candidate will have experience inmanuscript collection appraisal and accessioning, demonstrated understanding ofarchival description and materials, work experience with project management,familiarity with archival standards (EAD, METS, MARC, MODS), and strongcommunication skills.
Responsibilities
The Accessioning and Processing Archivist has fullresponsibility for managing the intake of manuscript collections andsupervising processing support staff consisting of student assistants, andvolunteers. The Archivist establishes workflow and work schedules, and createsmechanisms for reduction of collection backlogs. He/she assists with thepacking and shipment of collections using a rental van or moving company fromdonor sites. Trains unit staff and edits/reviews unit staff work-product,especially the creation of collection records in OCLC and the local collectionmanagement system. He/she plans the goals for collection intake and developsaccessioning plans for collections in coordination with manuscript unit staffand curators. The Archivist works closely with curators in the assessment ofcollections and in selection of collection materials. He/she is alsoresponsible for the administration of new acquisitions and works with theDigital Collections Unit to develop and maintain tracking tools.
UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate inlibrary-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shareddecision-making environment and to be active professionally. Professionalcontributions beyond the primary responsibilities are required for advancementin the Librarian series. The successful candidate will show promise or evidenceof such contributions.
